Atari 520 1040 ST STE Mega computer external hard disk drive 200MB & SCSI cable

Boxed System Solutions 200MB External hard drive for use with Atari 520 / 1040 ST / STF / STFM / STE and MEGA computers. The drive has been divided into 4 partitions. Drive is powered using HD Driver ver.

8 and a recovery disk is included. SCSI interface cable and power cable included. NOTE: you will need at least 1mb to run a hard drive on any Atari ST, but even that is not enough, 2 or 4mb memory is strongly recommended. Eg: Cubase will not run on a 1mb machine with a hard drive installed.

STFM / Meag ST owners : you need to have at least TOS 1.04, anything earlier like TOS 1 or 1.02 this drive will NOT work. STE owners: some early atari STE's had faulty DMA chips which caused data corruption! Ensure you have a good DMA chip in your STE before using it. I will NOT be held responsible for any damage caused to this hard drive if it is used with an STE with bad DMA - PLEASE READ BELOW >>. DMA problems with Atari STe Some of the first Atari STe machines that rolled out of Atari's factory came with a malfunctioning DMA (Direct Memory Access) chip , affecting a connected harddisk in such a way that data would become corrupted.

Apparently these machines still worked fine with Atari's own harddisks (though I make no guarantees), but with regular SCSI disks connected via an SCSI host adapter Link, Link II, Link 97, TopLink etc. You would definitely get problems.

To determine if your STe has a faulty DMA chip (which needs to be replaced before attaching a harddisk) you need to open up your machine and locate the chip, which is found close to (underneath) where the floppy disk drive is. If you find a chip marked as follows you're OK and can go ahead with a harddisk: C398739-001A (Atari-1990)-31.

However, if you find a chip marked with the numbers below you have a damaged DMA chip and need to get a new one before attempting to use a harddisk via an SCSI host-adapter: C025913-38 PH23-001A.
